Quotes from 1984:

“Tragedy, he perceived, belonged to the ancient time, to a time when there were still privacy, love, and friendship, and the members of a family stood by one another without needing to know the  reason.” -pg. 30

This quote explains how a situation going wrong, was something that could only happen in the “old-times”, and how in earlier years there wasn’t as much security as there is currently. It explains how there was a time to cherish love and friendship, but now that is impossible because of the controlling government.

“Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” -pg. 70

This passage reveals the truth about the society the people are living in. Basically, it’s saying that no one will go against governmental policies because they do not understand their function. And because they have no knowledge of them they therefore, can’t rebel.

“At the sight of  the words I love you the desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid.” -pg.109

This quote shows how emotional thoughts begin to take over people’s  mindset, and the risky doings that seemed worth it at the time; become stupid. Since emotional appeal has come into the picture, Watson is not willing to risk his life, as he wishes to stay around for the one that he loves.

” The air seemed to kiss one’s skin. It was the second of May. From somewhere on the deeper in the heart of the wood came the droning of ring doves…He was a bit early” -pg. 117

These lines express Watson’s feeling when he goes to meet the girl. It represents his nervousness and the anxiety he has built up inside of him.

“I hated the sight of you…I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterwards. Two weeks ago I thought seriously of smashing your head in with a cobblestone.”-pg.121

These are Winston’s  thoughts about the girl, before he had found out that she loved him. He proclaims all of these profound things, because he had made assumptions that she was apart of the Thought Police.

“I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don’t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” -pg. 126

This quote represents the aspects of 1984, that illustrates the almost “perfect” society that they are trying to maintain. Trying to keep up to a standard such as that will eventually create insane people, which is why Winston wishes these characteristics over society.

“…his hair, which had been almost white, had turned black. Also he was not wearing his spectacles. He gave Winston a sharp glance, as though verifying his identity, and then paid no more attention to him…”– pg. 224

In this passage a shocking discovery is made about the shop keeper, Mr. Charrington. As Charrington rapidly goes through this transformation Winston is disturbed but then realizes that he is an agent of the Thought Police.

“Anything that hinted at corruption always filled him with a wild hope.” pg.125

This quote shows how Winston is longing for a weak spot in society’s government. He is determined to watch it fail, so that people are able to live more freely and be able to express themselves without someone breathing down their neck watching their every move.

“2+2=5” pg. 290

Although it is not a technical quote with words, this equation truly expresses the control that Big Brother has over Airstrip One. This equation is what people are forced to believe even if they know the true answer. Accepting this equation is evidnece that you know the government has controll over everything.

 “He loved Big Brother.”-pg. 297

Though it is a shorter sentence, it has so much power and brings closure to a great novel. This dictates to us that after a good effort towards fighting for privacy and freedom to believe in what is right, everything that Winston had against the government was no more. He eventually had to accept everything about the world that he lived in.
